About the Position: Serves as the principal mechanic or technical lead at a large lock and dam site. Implements and maintains a site-specific program of scheduled inspections, test operations, preventive maintenance, and planned or unplanned emergency repair and replacement of a wide variety of electrical, electronic, hydraulics, and mechanically interrelated/interlocking facility equipment and controls. This position is located at Ashland City, TN.

Duties

Implements and maintains a scheduled and unplanned/emergency inspections, test operations, preventive maintenance, and repair/replacement of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical interrelated/interlocking equipment and controls. Works from facility plans, intricate schematics, manufacturers manuals, engineering drawings to trace and diagnose problems or impending problems with the objective of preventing actual breakdown and/or minimizing critical lock and dam down-time. Makes repairs to electrical/electronic/mechanical/hydraulic/pneumatic equipment. Maintains records documenting maintenance and repair work to include the preparation of field schematic drawings of equipment and systems, as required. Provides technical direction to other full-time and seasonal site operating staff personnel assigned to assist in preventive maintenance and repair activities. Inspects, builds, troubleshoots, and/or disassembles electric motors, gasoline and diesel engines of the associated equipment at the installation. May serve as primary credit card holder responsible for purchasing parts, materials, and supplies for project operation and maintenance requirements in accordance with written procedures and policies governing purchase actions under this authority.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to lift and carry materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Drug Testing Designated Position: Incumbent of this position is subject to all the provisions of the Civilian Drug Testing Program.
  • May be required to have a valid state driver's license, based on job-related, site-specific requirements.
  • Pre-Employment Physical Required.
  • This position is "mission essential" which means incumbents are not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies created by inclement weather conditions or other emergency situations as appropriate unless supervisor instructs otherwise.
  • May be required to maintain an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card in good standing, based on site-specific requirements.

Selecting and using a wide variety of hand and power tools, equipment, measuring devices and materials, along with applicable methods, techniques and procedures specific to electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanic work such as diagnosis, testing, repair or modification, and installation. Working under general supervision and subject to occasional inspection - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen OutAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (Theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble Shooting Physical Effort: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hand and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes. Climbs ladders and poles. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside during the day and at night, as required by emergencies, on high structures over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical wires, and on scaffolds or slings. Occasionally, works behind bulkhead or in tunnels below water level. Is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, exposure to moving equipment, machinery, loud noises, inclement weather, and dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vest, protective hearing devices, hard hat, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.
