You will serve as the Branch Chief for the Exploration Science Office in the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division. The Exploration Science Office is responsible for supporting and preparing for terrestrial and planetary exploration, operations, and science. In particular, Artemis and lunar surface science training and operations integration in addition to acquiring and interpreting imagery for crew safety and spacecraft performance, science, and supporting disaster
response.
Duties
Manage, direct, and develop a team of scientists who plan and train for human exploration missions integrating science into operations, acquiring and interpreting imagery for crew safety and spacecraft performance, and supporting disaster response.
Initiate project or study reviews, monitor budget and resources, and evaluate progress or changing requirements; provide technical evaluation or study feasibility, justification of exploration mission and laboratory operations.
Serve as a nationally and internationally recognized technical management expert, technical authority, and technical adviser/consultant to NASA management, government agencies, scientific community, and the aerospace industry.
Develop a diverse and inclusive workforce and team and fosters a cooperative, open, helpful and collaborative work environment in the interest of increasing team effectiveness and job satisfaction.
Work with all levels of program officials to resolve and track complex and controversial problems in the area of planetary exploration, Earth and planetary surface observation interpretation, and image acquisition and interpretation.
Oversee related activities by support contractor(s) and its subcontractors, government furnished equipment providers, International Partners (IPs), and other NASA Centers to provide for expedient progress in accordance with program plans.
Perform a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees.

Requirements
- Current Federal employees must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
- A one-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
Providing technical leadership, advice, guidance and oversight on geologic expeditions, lunar surface exploration, planetary science operations, or human exploration missions across communities such as academic researchers, flight controllers or operations, astronauts, spacecraft design engineers, management;
Leading multi-discipline engineering, scientific or technology programs, projects or task teams to conduct analyses and recommend solutions for technical issues encountered in a variety of studies;
Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders within the research or spaceflight community and advising others on technical issues related to space or planetary exploration, and resolving problems that impact project performance (e.g., addressing critical timelines, resource allocation, compatibility of systems and subsystems, and constraints).

Education
Basic Education Requirement:
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
