You will serve as a POLICE OFFICER (HANDLER/TRAINER) in the FORCE PROTECTION DEPARTMENT of CB CEN GULFPORT SEC DET.

Duties

You will serve as a Working Dog Handler in a law enforcement environment. You will use an explosives detection dog to inspect packages and personal belongings when admitting personnel into controlled areas. You will conduct random searches of vehicles to detect unauthorized removal of classified material, government property, contraband, weapons, or explosives. You will conduct investigations (e.g., preliminary, non-criminal) to determine warranted action. You will complete forms for documentation of events (e.g., issuing citations, interviewing witnesses).

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. You will be required to sign a DD-Form-2760, Qualification to possess firearms or ammunition.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You must meet the qualifications and be certified to carry a firearm. You will need to maintain firearm proficiency.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You are required to wear a uniform and maintain appearance and grooming standards per Navy instructions and regulations.
  • You must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Your resume is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to this position. Therefore, we encourage you to be clear and specific when describing your experience. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Conducting inspections of buildings and vehicles utilizing dogs to locate drugs or explosives; 2) Interpreting dog signals/communications to determine probable cause, obtain search authorization, perform search, recover the evidence, field test and evaluate the evidence, make apprehension and prepare written reports; 3) Performing on/off leash obedience, controlled aggression, and safe utilization of dogs in congested areas; 4) Providing care, maintenance, and explosive, drug and patrol training to dogs in accordance with instructions and guidelines; and 5) Conducting checkpoints and roadblocks as directed in effort to reduce criminal activity.
