This position is located in Police Services. The primary purpose of the position is to monitor physical security equipment and systems for the James H. Quillen VA Health Care System, Mountain Home, Tennessee.
Duties
The Security Assistant's duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs alarm and access monitoring, trace access patterns, and assign or remove user permissions.
Opens and secures doors remotely during routine and emergency operations.
Responds to alarm systems monitoring fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, medical assist teams, etc.
Performs system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center.
Operates a variety of communications and security equipment, such as computers, multi-frequency radios, multi-line telephone system, and other related peripherals.
Maintains accurate key inventory and accountability database.
Monitors and receives routine and emergency calls from a variety of sources that need police, fire, medical or other emergency services.
Maintains contact with law enforcement units on assignment.
Monitors and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication circuits.
Compiles and prepares reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center.
Operates an established vehicle registration and visitor management program.
Coordinates with various federal, state and local law enforcement officials for coordination of emergency situations.
Conducts equipment inventories and completes records and other logs.
Enters, updates, and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases.
Queries for items such as criminal histories, arrest warrants, drivers record, vehicle registration, stolen property, firearms, etc.
Work Schedule: All tour schedules are at the needs of the service- tours include 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am, maybe required to work evenings, weekends and a compressed tour Sunday through Saturday 7am - 7pm or 7pm- 7am.

Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Working on off-tours, rotating shifts or regular overtime may be required.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have at least One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Security Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of security or law enforcement objectives and programs; carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration; monitoring and responding to physical alarm systems and security cameras; dispatching officers; monitoring computers for video surveillance; and maintaining reports and logs.

Substitution of Education: Applicants must have successfully completed (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical

Combination of Experience and Education: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e. beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
