About the Position: Serves as a Respiratory Therapist rotating to the intensive care units (medical and surgical/open heart) and to hospital wards to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assesses patient cardiopulmonary status based on physical exam, pulmonary function results, (baseline spirometry, pre and post bronchodilator, pre and post exercise, and carbon monoxide diffusing capacity) and laboratory data.

Duties
Perform assessments of patients through examination, analyses of laboratory results and interpretation of x-rays.
Interpret data to recognize critical values that fall outside the ranges for normal blood.
Perform basic life support including chest compressions and rescue breathing and assists with emergency intubations and bag-valve-mask resuscitation as needed.
Operate complex pulmonary function testing software and document results.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Shift work is required. Additionally, may be required to rotate shifts (days, evenings, and nights) or be on call after duty hour. When on call, response time is 30 minutes for emergency (code blue) situations.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification within 6 months of employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This is an Inclement Weather Essential position.
- Position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Associations (AHA) within 90 days of employment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience performing arterial blood gas draw and analysis; operating and/or maintaining ventilator equipment; and administering nebulizer medication treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Respiratory Therapy and/or Respiratory Care.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the
computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
A Respiratory Therapist License is preferred, but not required.
