The purpose of this position is to operate a motor vehicle, he/she will be under the direct supervision of the Transportation Operator Supervisor, in Engineering Service Line at the VA Central Iowa Medical Center. Incumbent will operate the following vehicles, but not limited to,15 passenger bus, passenger cars, dump trucks, cargo trucks up to 24,000 GVWR with hydraulic & electronic lift gates, tractors with end loaders, power mowing equipment, and related equipment used in snow removal.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Incumbent will operate the following vehicles, but not limited to, 15 to 22 passenger bus, passenger cars, 1 ton dump trucks, cargo trucks up to 24,000 GVWR with hydraulic & electronic lift gates, tractors with end loaders, power mowing equipment, and related equipment used in snow removal. Employee will transport co-workers, patients who can care for themselves, medical records; parts and other materials needing picked up or delivered to the hospital and CBOC's. Incumbent will perform labor duties for the maintenance of grounds, such as snow removal, on as needed basis, moving furniture, mowing, etc. Motor vehicle operator will drive fleet cars to be fueled, washed/detailed, pick-up orders and to be maintenance. Fleet cars are driven off station on city roads and interstates to get to their destination. Drive the dump truck to move logs, leaves, trash, dirt, etc. on station. Arriving at the departing from pickup and discharge points at scheduled times. Reading installation maps and judge road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use. Performing operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Maintaining records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accidents/incident reports. Using two-way radios (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. Possessing valid State Driver's License is required for the position. Performs other related duties as assigned. Driver License Requirements: Must possess a valid State Driver License to operate a motor vehicle. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Incumbent is subjected to long hours of driving vehicles. Physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. The employee is required to handle objects one hundred (100) pounds and over. The employee will assist passengers on and off of the shuttle. Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a results of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. Must have ability to drive in rural areas, very congested Metropolitan traffic and/or construction zones. Must safely handle patients, both stretcher and wheelchair, in loading and unloading from vans and buses. The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Shift work may be required. May be required to work overtime after normal working hours providing it is an emergency or their services are needed to transport patients.
