This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is with the Directorate of Industrial Operations.

Duties

Set up welding machines to perform welds in flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead position depending on the process and requirements of the work. Perform inert gas shielded welding, i.e. MIG/TIG, in the repair, rebuild, or modification of bodies, chassis and parts of vehicle assemblies. Determine proper heat range necessary to weld, cut, bend and shape a variety of metals such as ballistic steel and aluminum, cast iron, cast steel, magnesium mild steel and stainless steel. Perform vehicle body repair work such as straightening metal structural and body parts. Perform overhead welding and brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting structural steel and other metals to prescribed dimensions. Fabricate less complex sheet metal items using equipment such as shears, band saws, box and pan brakes and drill presses. Select techniques, machines, materials, the jigs, fixtures and clamping devices required to assemble and set up the parts to be welded. Use Oxyacetylene equipment and/or Arc Welding and MIG, TIG processes to accomplish welding assignments. Interpret technical manuals, military standards, engineering change orders, prints, diagrams and blueprints etc.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement dependent on workload requirements.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Incumbent must provide documentation of welder qualification testing to an AWS or ASME code in the following processes: GMAW aluminum plate (3/8" thickness or greater) and GTAW aluminum sheet (1/8" thickness or less).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welding Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Minimum Experience Requirement: I have the ability to perform common Welding Worker duties. I can set up various welding equipment to perform welds in flat, horizontal and vertical positions on mild steel; Perform overhead welding and brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting structural steel and other metals to prescribe dimensions; Apply manual welding processes to weld parts made of commonly used metals. Plan and lay out the work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Work requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing and crawling. Works in cramped and awkward positions. Handles objects weighing up to and sometimes greater than 50 lbs. in setting up and performing work. Works indoors and outdoors, both in shop and TDY sites in varied weather. Work is usually performed on concrete floors or in equipment being repaired. Work areas may be dirty, noisy and smoky. Is exposed to a variety of potentially hazardous situations that are considered in evaluation of the job. Subject to discomfort from wearing protective equipment.
