Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Employee will work approx. 6 months from March to November and be in non-pay status for the rest of the year.

Duties

Performs a variety of trade work including Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Water Treatment, Electrical, and Wastewater Treatment. Responsible for all aspects of water treatment, and water sampling to meets State and Federal permit requirements. Operates, maintains, and performs necessary repairs on a Membrane Filtration surface water treatment plant. Takes independent action when water quality falls below acceptable standards. Maintains treated water levels in the potable storage tanks. Ensures proper disinfection and operation of distribution. Gain and maintains a State of Michigan F-5 water treatment license. Inspects and performs necessary repairs on lift stations and wastewater collection system Assists with winterizing and de-winterizing water plants, wastewater plants, charging and draining intakes and distribution systems. During April through October, this position is required to live and work in Isle Royale National Park, approx. 70 miles by water or sea plane from Houghton. Isle Royale is a large, remote, isolated island in Lake Superior and is 99% federally-designated Wilderness. Transportation for visitors, employees, and their families, as well as mail, groceries, and other supplies are provided via the park's ship. Government housing is furnished on the island at no cost to the employee during the operating season. There are no roads, limited amenities, and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. Pets are prohibited. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-9 without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Knowledge of Materials If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
