You will serve as a Wood Worker of NAVSUP FLEET LOGISTICS CENTER NORFOLK.
THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Defense Industrial Base/Major Range and Test Facilities Base of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service
Duties
You will construct and repair supply, shipping, and storage containers of various sizes.
You will cut boards or sheets of wood into specific lengths.
You will use power tools and machines such as nailing machines, banding and strapping devices, power saws, drills, drill presses, preset table and radial straws.
You will pack and repack items using accepted packing containers, materials, devices, methods and techniques.
You will custom pack various items that cannot be fitted into containers of standard size.
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You may be required to obtain and maintain a license to operate material handling equipment.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- You may be required to lift up to 45lbs in weight.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: the ability to perform the duties of a WG-06 Woodworker as demonstrated by experience working under close supervision constructing and/or repairing standardized shipping and storage items such as boxes, small crates, pallets, and storage bins using wood and wood substitutes; cutting boards and sheets of wood to specified lengths; Cutting, fitting, joining, and/or installing wooden parts and items; fastening by banding, bolting, and/or screwing; using hand tools, and handheld and/or stationary power tools common to woodworking; using shop math to measure and calculate length, width, and thickness in fractions of inches; using squares to align corners and joints.
