About the Position: Serves as a Forestry Technician (Wildland Fire Planner) leading a team engaged in planning and coordinating prescribed burning and wildfire management activities for the 284,000 acres at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.

Duties

Provide advisory services such as assignments, training and review of fire management actions and events for assigned personnel. Contribute to the overall resource management plan by providing advisory services in areas such as detection, aerial burning and/ or fire suppression. Prepare maps and/or reports to illustrate necessary forestry data as gathered. Negotiate mutual arrangements to coordinate activities so that common objectives are met.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation, National Agency Check with Inquiries- NACI, to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment and annual physical.
  • Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of emergency.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent is required to wear prescribed protective uniforms and to use protective equipment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires incumbent to be available after hours, weekends, or holidays, seasonally, depending on weather conditions, and current or projected workload requirements.
  • Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of emergency.
  • Employee must be well trained and highly capable to utilize several highly technical GPS hardware and computer software programs.

Coordinating amongst a multitude of differing burn operations personnel to plan prescribed burning schedules. 2. Planning burn and/ or forestry operations in accordance with all established Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans, policies and timelines. 3. Accommodating military training activities as necessary while planning burn and/or forestry operations. 4. Advising management on matters such as land/area resources, detection, aerial burning and fire suppression. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as; Forestry, Forest Resources, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Wildlife Management or other related fields. (NOTE: You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts). Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
