This position is a Biological Science Technician, GS- 0404-6 working in Seneca Falls, NY for the R5-Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. The duties of this position encompass biological studies including wildlife and plant surveying; biological data management and reports; providing information to various groups; operating various equipment. This is a temporary position expected to last 1 Year but may be extended up to a total of 2 years at management's discretion.

Duties

As a Biological Science Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists in planning wildlife censuses and surveys such as establishing schedules and procedures to accomplish surveys. Independently carries out wildlife studies by following research methods and established procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work. Monitors and implement activities related to conservation, management, and/or control of wildlife. Monitors and assists in control of wildlife, plant disease outbreaks, pest plant control, mowing/seeding activities and vegetation removal. Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife. Assists in planning plants surveys and recommends plant management practices. Assists in planning habitat management activities designed to monitor, control, and eradicate non-native or invasive plant species and/or limit plant disease outbreaks. Independently carries out plant studies by following research methods and established procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work. Collects, assesses, and organizes biological and physical environment data from field investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fish, wildlife or plant resources from development projects, restoration projects or habitat improvement projects. Provides basic information on fish and wildlife resources and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to groups and individuals. Operates farm tractors, light trucks, vehicles, small watercraft and various other equipment such as generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, water monitoring equipment, global positioning systems and cameras. Provides work direction and guidance to biological technicians and volunteers and YCC enrollees, including safe handling of tools and operation of motorized vehicles and watercraft.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Driver’s License: This position requires the incumbent to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Selectee must hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout their employment in this position.
  • Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform is required.
  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by the closing date 11/12/2024 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-6] Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that was equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed in order to successfully perform the duties of this position and that was in the same field or field directly related to this position. Examples of specialized experience may include: conduct vegetation studies; apply herbicides; conduct surveys of wildlife and/or waterfowl; capture, handle, and tag a variety of wildlife; use various computer software to enter biological data into existing databases; gather biological data, evaluate data and present findings in report form. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient detail at this level of work, e.g., begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. There is no education substitution at the GG-6 grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
