About the Position: This position may be filled at ANY grade level, WG-08, WG-10, or the target WG-11, depending the level of experience demonstrated on the applicants resume.

Duties

At the WG-08 or WG-10 grade level: you will be hired in a developmental capacity and will perform progressively more difficult and responsible assignments and tasks associated with the work of Machinist WG-11 duties. Responsibilities will increase in complexity as you progress through the intervening WG-10, to the target WG-11. You will be promoted upon successful completion of training and performance requirements. At the target WG-11 grade level you perform the following journeymen level Machinist duties: Perform all the machining work required in the manufacturing of castings, weldments, and other fabrications. Perform processes that require special adaptation or extension of the use of conventional machine tools. Utilize a variety of specialized or non-conventional machine tools, or numerically controlled machine tools CNC and/or Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing CAD/CAMCNC and/or Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing CAD/CAM. Plan and lay out work, set up and operate a variety of standard and non-standard machine tools, and set up, debug, and reprogram N/C machines. Perform bench and assembly work, and precision handwork to finish, fit and assemble machine parts.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) ~ without more than normal supervision. WG-08: Operate one or more conventional or computer numerical control (CNC) machines to perform a specific machining operation in the machining of castings, forgings, or other raw stocks made of various metals, metal alloys, and other material. Make minor changes in machine settings to maintain sizes and/or shape of work piece. Follow detailed instructions provided from supervisor and/or other journeyman Machinist to complete job assignments. WG-10: Manufacture, repair and rebuild parts and items of equipment. Independently set up and operate most types of conventional and CNC machine tools. Use a variety of auxiliary machine tool attachments such as; rotary vises, dividing heads, taper attachments, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, etc. Work from blueprints, sketches, and work orders to complete work orders. Determine which machine tools to be used. Perform precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts. Use shop mathematics and handbook formulas to compute and verify dimensions. WG-11: manufacturing complex and non-routine parts and items of raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials. Perform machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, and items that require differential or compound indexing. Troubleshoot and determine repair processes. Apply thorough knowledge of advanced shop mathematics. Perform work assignments that require machining on rare metal, new metal alloy, or other new material. Failure to meet any of the Screen out Elements will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires standing, bending and reaching; and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 45 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, and other workers are available for heavier items. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well-lighted, heated, ventilated shop. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject, to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
