The primary purpose of this position is to independently dismantle, maintain, repair, relocate, modify, align, and install industrial utility systems and equipment, perform pipefitting, plumbing, waste treatment of exotic fuels, and industrial plant machinery and systems, ensuring water and equipment meet all regulatory requirements.
Duties
- Independently installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
- Independently installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains a variety of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, backflow prevention devices/assemblies, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
- Performs all tasks involved in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of equipment located in the collection systems.
- Performs preventive and scheduled maintenance on swimming pool systems and equipment.

- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

- This is a Key Position.
- The duties of this position meets all requirements as a category 4 designation (CONT)
- (CONT) and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capabilities of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively.
- This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and CAN NOT become a member of the Ready Reserve. (IAW: DoDD 1200.7, “Screening the Ready Reserve.”)
- This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue interrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of mechanical, electric, and electronic procedures, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components of industrial plant support machinery and equipment.
2. Knowledge of operating characteristics of the involved systems and equipment, and the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.
3. Knowledge and ability to use and work with test equipment and measuring devices, such as micrometers, dial indicators, anometers, volt meters, and flow meters.
4. Knowledge of safety practices, regulations, and procedures. Skill in use of hand and power tools and a variety of test equipment.
5. Skill and ability to read and use the requirements in technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, sketches, diagrams, work orders, and other specifications.
6. Ability to make templates, jigs, and other fixtures required for repair or installation. Ability to independently diagnose, plan, and complete projects or work orders involving major systems in their entirety.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance. Frequently handles objects weighing over 50 pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing over 50 pounds and over for considerable distances. Required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work performed outside, conditions are expected to be usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in bad weather, or in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Ability to travel from different worksites, requires operation of motor vehicles. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, infections and occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones. Work performed inside, areas can be adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Subject to burns from chemicals. Occasionally, climbs and works from ladders and stages, causing exposure to possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Exposure to sewer gas, acids and chemical additives, hazards from infection, dirt, grease, and dampness. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, face shields, respirators, safety shoes, and glasses are used. Employee will use and maintain prescribed safety/protective clothing and equipment such as the following: hard hat, safety glasses, shoes, belts, face shields, respirators, gas masks, ear protection devices, gloves, coveralls, and foul weather gear.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
