This position is located at an assigned Veterans Administration medical facility performing work involved with repairing, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. The work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combinating of locking mechanisms.
Duties
Inspecting, repairing, and installing all types and lock functions.
Installing and maintaining electronic locks and keying devices.
Installing and maintaining high security mechanical locking devices.
Installing and maintaining window and door lock mechanisms.
Determining and installing the correct door closer for a door size, weight, swing, and operation.
Cutting new keys for a variety of locks.
Keying, pinning, and changing mechanical locking devices (removable core, interchangeable core, key in knob, key in lever, cylindrical/mortise locks and deadbolts).
Removing foreign objects from locks.
Generating master key systems and maintaining master key records.
Servicing and changing combinations on safes and vaults.
Maintaining security and locks for narcotic and/or medication storage.
Planning and laying out work.
Preparing diagrams to identify dimensions or special parts requirements.
Re-working and finishing substitute parts and fabricating parts to close fits.
Using simple shop and trade mathematics.
Reading and interpreting blueprints and sketches, manufacturer's literature, installation diagrams, and templates.
Understanding and maintaining complex lock combination and keying matrices, charts, and records.
Reading and interpreting local and national safety codes.
Adjusting, maintaining, and using small hand tools such as files, tweezers, and tension wrenches.
Using powered tools such as key duplicating and coding machines, grinders, and stamping machines.
Using electric drills, acetylene torches, soldering irons, brazing torches, bench lathes and drill presses.
Troubleshooting and repairing electronic locks and keying devices using electronic test and repair equipment.
Troubleshooting and repairing or overhauling door closures of various manufacturers.
Picking or otherwise defeating or bypassing locks when keys are lost or lock is inoperable.
Improvising and applying neutralization techniques that do not damage the locking devices and security containers or doors during lockout situations.
Performing visual and operations tests to locate trouble and determine method for opening and repairing malfunctioning devices.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Work is normally performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area. Occasionally work is done outside in inclement weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns.
