You will serve as a Woodcraftsman in the Research and Development Services Division of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY.

Duties

You will construct and repair high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, research and experimental devices and decorative woodwork for use in offices, planes, ships, submarines, shops, laboratories and other uses. You will be required to read, interpret and check plans, blueprints and sketches. You will be responsible for minimizing waste and cost when laying out patterns on materials, when selecting and substituting materials and when planning or changing the sequence of the work to cut time. You will be required to have extensive knowledge of the various properties and characteristics of a wide variety of hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, veneers, wood substitutes, gluing and bonding agents and other woodworking materials.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks. I select, cut, turn, shape, join, bond, fit, assemble, develop, curve, contour and decorate wooden materials and parts using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools and machines. I devise fixtures, templates, and jigs to hold or guide items in woodworking machinery. I assemble or make patterns for nonstandard cutter edge shapes. I lay out work and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches and devise any additional plans to accomplish projects. I advise customers on matters such as errors in their plans, or dimensions, problems of fit or installation, and the selection or substitution of wooden materials. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence.
