This position is located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, in the Cultural Resources and Museum Branch (Collections). TERM positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months, with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Duties

Evaluate existing museum collections for redundancy and relevancy. Develop and write recommendations and guidance for culling, removal, and deaccessioning of museum items. Work with repositories and agencies for identification and transfer of deaccessioned collections. The chosen individual will work in a dynamic and diverse collection of over 6.2 million items that covers many topics and events such as the presence of the U.S. Army, conservation and recreation, the Alcatraz Indian Occupation, dairy ranching in the Marin Headlands, Alcatraz prison history, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and coastal defenses. This Curator position supports the Golden Gate National Recreation Area's Museum Program in its efforts to assess and refine the collection to those materials and items that meet the Scope of Collections (SOCS), Records Management guidelines, and park mission, thereby allowing the park to focus on better protecting/preserving relevant resources and sharing those with the public.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/12/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: Basic Requirements for Museum Curator, GS-1015 EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in museum work, or similar area of cultural resources management. You must include transcripts. -OR- EXPERIENCE: at least four years of experience that provided the knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study of museum work, or similar area of cultural resources management. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: withcourses equivalent to a major, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. (Course work should have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation). Creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation. An equivalent combination of such education and experience as above. You must include transcripts. -AND- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience includes: (1) Handling of objects and historic materials in museum collections, including archives, textiles, and archeology (2) research in provenance and chain of custody of museum collections (3) experience in evaluating museum records and holdings against mission and scope of organization. -OR- SPECIALIZED EDUCATION: At least three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with fields of study such as museum management, cultural resources management, archeology, ethnology, history, archives, biology, geology, and paleontology, or other courses related to this position. -OR- COMBINATION OF SPECIALIZED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of such education and experience as above. For example, I have six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 45 semester hours of related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). You must include transcripts Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
