The primary purpose of this position is to have overall responsibility of psychological services over an installation's operational Air Force squadrons. Serve as the multidisciplinary Integrated Operational Support (IOS) mental health clinical psychologist, consultant, & resource to other medical & embedded mental health staff.

Duties

Screens and interviews patients and perform bio-psychological social evaluations. Develops and implements initiatives to mitigate psychosocial stressors and risks and optimize Airman performance. Exercises full professional responsibility in psychological consultation, education, and training to military commanders/senior leaders, other mental health professionals, and medical staff. Provides evidence-based, clinical psychology services.

  • Note: If the requirement in (b) below is waived, the qualifying degree must be from a program accredited by the APA.
  • (b) An APA-accredited predoctoral internship in professional psychology (This 1-year internship is part of an APA-accredited doctoral program. The AF accepts this internship from any APA-accredited site including designated AF sites). cont
  • Waiver of an APA-accredited program must be staffed through appropriate AF approval authority IAW AF instruction. Note: If the requirement in (a), above is waived, the internship must be an APA-accredited doctoral program.
  • (c) An optional post-doctoral fellowship allows for subspecialization in operations/aviation psychology, child/adolescent psychology, clinical health psychology, or neuropsychology.
  • Must have a valid license to practice psychology from a US jurisdiction
  • Government civilian providers must meet all applicable credentialing requirements IAW military treatment facility guidelines and be fully qualified to perform within the scope of their practice. cont

  • Must possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Qualifications

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED: May be required to work extended hours or rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. This is a Centrally Managed Position in the 0180 Series, Medical Field. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions Series 0180 + IOR (Individual Occupational Requirement). BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Degree: Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for the doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required. Note: You must submit copies of your transcript with your application. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes applying a working knowledge of clinical psychology, human performance enhancement within neurocognitive and psychosocial domains, and improving personal resiliency. Utilizing knowledge of evidence-based treatments and standards of clinical practice for a full range of psychological disorders to plan and provide treatment to patients. Applying a working knowledge of administration, scoring, and interpretation of select psychological and psycho-social measures to properly assess patient's and family's needs. Preparing accurate written documentation in patient care and providing guidance and consultant services to medical professionals, managers, and clients. Gathering, synthesizing, and applying data, including psychological testing, interviews, medical/non-medical records to the identification and mitigation of population risks. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-12 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-13 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Substantive professional knowledge of clinical psychology, human performance enhancement within neurocognitive and psychosocial domains, and improving personal resiliency. 2. Expert knowledge of evidence-based treatments and standards of clinical practice for a full range of psychological disorders to plan and provide treatment to patients. 3. Knowledge of military organizations and culture and the unique stressors upon workers in an operational military workplace. 4. Knowledge of administration, scoring, and interpretation of select psychological and psycho-social measures to properly assess patient's and family's needs. 5. Skill to prepare accurate written documentation in patient care and provide guidance and consultant services to medical professionals, managers, and clients. 6. Ability to gather, synthesize, and apply data, including psychological testing, interviews, medical/non-medical records to the identification and mitigation of population risks. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
