This Painter position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven, CT Campus, in the Facility Management Service Line. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
Some of the Painter duties include, but are not limited to;
Receives little or no instructions in the performance of assigned tasks
Preparing surfaces for painting by filling cracks and holes, hand and machine sanding, wire brushing, sand blasting and steam cleaning.
Thinning and mixing various materials according to manufacturer's recommendations.
Applying coating materials with brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related methods as used in the painting trade.
Applying coating to both interior and exterior surfaces, plaster and masonry walls, sheet metal, structural steel, wood siding and trim.
Laying out and paint parking lot lines using stripping machine or roller.
Installing vinyl, cloth, or paper wall covering including removal of old covering by various methods such as scraping or steaming.
Properly preparing surfaces for new materials and must have knowledge of materials and tools used in paper hanging trade.
Preparing broken windows in wood sashes using proper glazing techniques and equipment.
Paint and refinish furniture, wood and metal, such as desks, cabinets, chairs, operating room and building service equipment.
Skilled in matching, tinting, toning and blending coating materials and in combining agents with coating materials.
Skilled in the use of tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices and wet and other thickness gauges.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, EST

Physical Requirements: Employee is required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. The employee sometimes works outside in bad weather. Occasionally, the employee may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
NOTE:
This position is an AFGE Bargaining Unit position.
This position is in the Competitive Service.
This position is covered by locality-based comparability pay.

Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action).
