You will serve as an Aerospace Engineer/Research Pilot in the Research Services Directorate which involves the piloting of aircraft (and/or Uninhabited Aerial Systems [UASs]) used in research, development, and test programs; planning/evaluating test parameters; performing flight and/or ground simulations of advanced missions and aircraft; participating with project engineers and scientists responsible for development, design, testing, evaluation, and reporting on new aircraft or aircraft systems

Duties

Participates in engineering research/operational aspects of a wide variety of flight, simulation requiring operation of aircraft types from single engine piston, medium jet aircraft to large transport category multi-engine turbo prop aircraft. Serves as a Lead Research Pilot on assigned flight/simulation experiments providing support piloting/operational consultation on other experiments/activities both inside and outside the continental United States. Develops, executes, and leads complex plans for flight mission operations with complicated and interactive factors, concepts, or conditions. Develops mission operations plans to accomplish research objectives. Applies accepted flight research principles/practices/techniques for aircraft operations to meet requirements of research experiments. Serves as safety pilot during flight experiments/research with other subject pilots. Interfaces with experiment developers, flight crew, research systems personnel, and mechanics in formulating/applying system constraints/procedures to flight documentation or flight/ground activities. Applies aviation/flight test knowledge and experience/safety practices to all flight projects in order to safely plan and operate Goddard/Wallops aircraft in support of NASA missions. Develops/designs flight operations, equipment, or systems for a broad range of interdisciplinary activities that cut across conventional lines of engineering/scientific fields. Requirements

  • If selected, you will be required to complete a financial disclosure statement.

  • At the time of initial appointment, you must possess a current FAA first class medical certificate or a military pilot flight physical; or you must obtain a NASA flight medical certification.
  • Selectee(s) will be required to work ON-SITE.
  • Current Federal employees must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. 1. Certificate and Rating: A current Federal Aviation Administration commercial pilot's license with an instrument rating (P-3C, C-130, UC-12, G-III or G-IV, or 777 aircraft) OR A pilot and instrument rating from the armed services 2. Flight Hours: 1,500 hours of pilot-in-command (or first pilot) flight time that included at least 500 hours in jet aircraft having at least 3,000 pounds of thrust per engine. 3. Specialized experience: To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Providing technical guidance in aerospace engineering or research flight operations to conduct research in an aerospace environment; Performing aircraft operations related to high performance, and extended envelope fixed-wing experimental and transport category aircraft; Performing airworthiness oversight; test plan development, approval and program management. Education

Basic Education Requirement:
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
