The general practice dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.

The General Dentistry dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:
Duties include but not limited to:
Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity
Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions.
Administer local anesthesia.
Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth.
Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth.
Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures.
Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work.
Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth.
Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures.
Perform digital dentistry modality to consult, follow up with and triage dental needs when appropriate.

Development and implementation of the curriculum plan.
On going evaluation of program content, faculty teaching, and resident performance.
Evaluation of resident training and supervision in affiliated institutions and off services rotations.
Maintenance of records related to the educational program and resident selection.
Oversee resident selection, match program, and PASS and MATCH.
Devote sufficient time to accomplish the assigned duties and responsibilities.
The Director will hold responsibilities in teaching, clinical practice, foster research opportunities, and all aspects of program administration.
Ensure residents practice evidence-based, high-quality dentistry.
Teach trainees in the clinical and classroom setting- prepare lectures, invite guest lectures.
Evaluate appropriateness of patients to be seen in the resident clinic, ensure appropriate resident case selection.
Maintain an active dialogue with VA referring providers and continuity of care, ensure patients seen for recall exam by referring provider.
Participate in quality assurance programs and continuing education.
Provide residents feedback and coaching as indicated.
Work with community and local educational resources to sustain and expand resident opportunity.
Facilitate resident participation in multidisciplinary treatment planning and implant board.
Monitor resident productivity.
Work with HR to ensure recruitment activity for residency program is sustained. Ensure compensation remains in alignment with local programs.
Actively participate in local and national residency director and education meetings and forums. Attend the National Residency Directors meetings and tele-conferences. Attend Allied Health and Medical Education Quarterly Meeting.
Ensure residents provider after hours dental emergency consultation services and are aware when to refer patients for higher care and when to consult with attending staff dental provider. Ensure residents are aware of process to prescribe medications after hours to local pharmacies.
Ensure collaboration and communication with in-patient setting for dental examination and indicated care.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience:
Completion of General Practice Residency in Dentistry or Advanced Education General Dentistry Residency

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
