Office of Legal Services (OLS) at the Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Inspector General (OIG) offers 6 to 10 weeks Spring Student Internship opportunity for college students interested in gaining experience in the Federal workforce, by assisting Records Management. A great opportunity for work experience as well as credit for school. Provides assistance in the areas of policy and legal research and writing, review policies, regulations, statutes, and assist with ongoing records matters.

Duties

As an unpaid Spring 2025 intern, you will be asked to assist the Agency Records Officer (ARO) and attorneys in the office with the following: Conducting research and analyzing the content of the Federal Records Act of 1950 to interpret and apply applicable statutes, rules, regulations, and executive orders as they pertain to requests for the Records Management program. Maintaining and developing law office SharePoint site and contributes to OLS intranet webpage content. Receiving files that contain related records for the project, program or activity, and segregating records, non-records, and personal papers in any medium. Developing metrics and applies software applications to capture program effectiveness; and advises the ARO on how they could be adopted throughout the organizational unit. Reviewing and evaluating program policies and procedure related to records management to determine gaps where additional guidance is needed. Drafts and recommends additional policies and procedures or modifications to existing guidance to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Inventorying records, records scheduling, and gathering business process information, and documentation from entities within the office.

Requirements

  • Must meet any applicable Federal, State, or local laws governing the employment of minors, if he/she is a minor. The minimum age requirement for employment in the Federal service is 16 years of age.
  • Appointees must sign a DOL Student Volunteer Agreement form, DL1-6082.
  • Must meet the definition of “student,” as set forth in 5 CFR 308.101, i.e. must be currently enrolled not less than half time in an accredited educational institution (HS, trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, or college.)
  • Must maintain status as a current student during your volunteer service.
  • Must be able to obtain a favorable background investigation.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must be currently enrolled at an accredited school.
  • Must be eligible to be employed in the Unites States under the immigration laws and regulations.

Qualifications

All eligibility requirements must be met at the time of application. To be a Student Volunteer, you must meet the below eligibility requirements: 1. Be at least 16 years old; and 2. Be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited academic institution on an at least part-time basis. 3. An accredited high school or trade school. 4. A junior or community college. 5. A four-year college or university. *A transcript showing proof of current enrollment is required to be submitted with your application package. Prior to onboarding, proof of enrollment for the semester of your volunteer service is required to verify your eligibility status as a student. *The Ideal Candidate for the Student Volunteer Administrative Professional position will have education of, or experience related to records management or administrative (office) work experience. The candidate should possess strong organizational skills and the ability to pay attention to details and handle routine tasks. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Experience with various office software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is desired. This position will not be filled until the Department's Placement Assistance Programs have been fully utilized. No Relocation or Permanent Change of Station Incentives will be offered. No Recruitment Incentives will be offered. This position is outside the bargaining unit. The candidate must be eligible to obtain the applicable security clearance level. If offered a position, the candidate will be required to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Education

Student Volunteer Program Education Requirement:

Must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree in business management, diploma, or certificate at an accredited college; professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying academic institution on a full-time or part-time basis. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications; applicant's resumes and supporting documentation should only reflect education received from schools accredited by such institutions.
