This position is located in Engineering Service of the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The Oscar G. Johnson VAMC is a complexity level 3 facility. The primary purpose of this position is to provide general equipment maintenance and repair, including but not limited to industrial and medical equipment. Also works under the direction of journeymen in the completion of duties and tasks in trades such as carpentry, air conditioning equipment, and pipefitting.

Duties

Major Duties Include: Accomplishes the more difficult phases of repair, adjustment and maintenance on various industrial types of machinery such as commercial laundry machines, food service equipment such as dish machines, tray carrousel, and industrial mixers, all hospital beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, and patients lifts, heavy commercial snowplows/including systems such as transmissions, sump pumps, conveyor systems, medical and domestic air compressors and air handling equipment. Installs, repairs, maintains, services, calibrates and adjusts control devices and systems including pneumatic relays, solenoids, switches, thermostats, regulators, oil and air supply and controls, alarms, safety devices and electrical/pneumatic air and electrically operated automatic door systems. Assists with repairing, assembly, disassembly and moving of furniture, including assessing room fit and verifying inventory. Assembles basic medical equipment. Perform maintenance on med gas systems including changing of cylinders and manifolds. Repairs, services and/or fabricates parts for metal equipment, systems, and devices. Use various types of tools to accomplish tasks including drills, grinders, wrenches, tapes and dies, hammers, cut-off saws, metal lathe, floor grinders, metal shear, bender, vertical mill, and welders/A/C, D/C, TIG, Oxygen/Acetyline, MIG, Plasma cutter, etc. Repairs various pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems and nonproduction equipment/machinery using manuals, blueprints, drawings, sketches, work orders or other such technical data sources. Maintains inventory of needed parts, tools and equipment, such as stock steel, nuts and bolts, welding supplies, sheet metal, etc. Responsible for the maintenance, lubrication of general engineering equipment such as air compressors, sump pumps, medical air compressors, conveyors, lift devices, loaders, hoists, ramps, etc. Maintenance and repair on the pneumatic tube system, utilizing system software to diagnose problems in the system. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm (times subject to change). Physical Requirements: The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 45 pounds unassisted and over 45 pounds with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach. Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods. In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment using hoists, holders, and pulleys as required. Working Conditions: The incumbent performs the work under all types of working conditions and may be subject to climbing ladders, to climbing stairs, often in extreme heat and cold. Incumbent must be able to lift and carry heavy objects, work in excessive noise, cramped positions and under stress type conditions. The incumbent must work in isolation rooms and on contaminated equipment. Must on occasion work on live wires, switches, and formers. Incumbent may be exposed to shock hazard at any time while working with electrical equipment and may be exposed to breathing dust, stale and contaminated air that will necessitate wearing an approved respirator. Incumbent is provided safety shoes, eye protection and any other personal protective equipment necessary to the work in the shop. Incumbent is responsible for appropriate use of personal equipment.
