Qualifications

NOTE: You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement. In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below: To qualify for the GS-15 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level defined as experience evaluating potential health effects resulting from exposure to radioactive materials; and interpreting scientific data related to risk analysis for environmental emergencies. Your application package will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of health physics principles and practices. Skill in oral communication sufficient to present scientific information to national and international organizations concerned with radiation science. Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of health physics to serve as an authority in providing advice and guidance. Ability to advise, counsel, and instruct personnel on methods of dealing with radiation hazards and procedures. Ability to interpret models for calculating risk from ionizing radiation. Skill in developing written materials to convey information from scientific studies on radiation health effects. Skill in interpreting results from scientific studies on risks of health effects from exposure to radiation. Ability to provide scientific expertise on radiation protection issues to senior management. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus; OR a combination of education and experience which included courses in the fields included in the described course work; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education comparable to the described coursework.
