The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Salisbury VA Medical Center, Facilities Management Service, Salisbury, NC. The primary duties of the position is the operation and operational maintenance of single and multiple fuel water or fire tube boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Operates, regulates and maintains the Boiler Plant Unit of a Maintenance and Operations Section.
Operates all equipment to ensure the boilers produce and control the amount of steam to meet the stations demands.
Performs routine maintenance and repair to all boiler related equipment.
Makes hourly checks of all operating equipment, recording pertinent details and makes independent operational decisions and judgments.
Collects water samples from boiler(s), de-aerating feed tank, condensate return system and city water system.
Analyzes and records water analysis for acidity, alkalinity, oxygen scavenger and the total dissolved solids and adds hazardous chemicals as required using the proper safety equipment and techniques.
Assures understanding the observance of rules and regulations concerning safety, fire, conduct, OSHA standards, storage and handling of hazardous materials, and care of equipment.
Uses all types of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Takes all precautionary measures in an attempt to prevent serious accidents.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday, 8-12 hours shifts that vary over time. Two days off.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Works in awkward or cramped position when making minor repairs. Frequent walking, standing, and climbing is required when checking equipment. Incumbent is primarily responsible for observation and adjustment of equipment and is not generally subject to sustained physical effort. On occasions, the incumbent works in awkward and cramped positions when making repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking and/or adjusting equipment. Must be able to climb and work from ladders, open and close heavy valves, clean and lubricate equipment and perform preventive maintenance using ADP printouts and common-sense techniques.
