The primary purpose of this position is to repair all types of gardening and landscaping tools and equipment to include 16 ft (or larger) "bat wing" mowers both driven and pulled by tractors.

Duties

- Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, and cleaning defective parts or components - Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment to maintain serviceability or to restore equipment to a serviceable condition. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe and clean work environment. - Uses and maintains hand and power tools and equipment required to accomplish duties of small engine and mower mechanic work. - Operates bush cutters or mower in direct support of grounds maintenance requirements.

  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
  • Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
  • This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
  • When necessary, may be required to cut grass and assist with duties related to grounds maintenance.
  • May be required to obtain a restricted area badge.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4800 General Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a GARDEN EQUIPMENT REPAIRER without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and policies to include environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials. 2. Knowledge of equipment common to the trade, i.e.., front-end alignment and wheel balancing equipment, turning and grinding equipment for servicing brake drums and discs or rotor assemblies, and drilling and pressure bleeding devices. 3. Knowledge of technical practices in order to remove, replace, clean and install a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as wheel cylinders, universal joints, springs, shock absorbers, catalytic converters, clutch assemblies, mufflers, etc. 4. Skill in the use of measuring instruments and test equipment such as test lamps, timing lights, tachometers, multimeters, and dwell meters. 5. Skill in using basic tools common to the occupation such as wrenches, screwdrivers, insulated pliers, electric drills, pneumatic wrenches, and soldering irons. Skill in locating improperly functioning parts for repair or replacement (troubleshooting) 6. Ability to read schematics, interpret manufactures repair manuals, and technical orders/specifications. Ability to maintain and repair combustion powered small engines, mowers, electric powered equipment, towed equipment, and comparable equipment without more than normal supervision. This includes basic maintenance such as changing oil, filters, and hydraulic parts/fluid. Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, bush cutters, and hand tools. Physical Effort: Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching, crawling under equipment and working in tight spaces or tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds or more with the assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Usually works outside under cover on a concrete surface in an area without air conditioning in hot and humid island weather. Continually exposed to dirt, dust, grease, and the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Occasionally works outside without cover under adverse weather conditions. Required to follow prescribed safety procedures and may be required to use safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, respirators, and other PPE. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
