The purpose of interpretation is to enrich people's lives through meaningful experiences and enjoyable recreation; preserve and protect natural and cultural resources through broad collaboration and shared stewardship; and inspire social and environmental consciousness to build community and sustain the health of the planet.

Duties

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park Hiring Official: Ryan Qualls [email protected] 937-673-8689 Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately late September to following mid-Septemberor late November to following mid-October or late January to following early January and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Subject to release and recall procedures. Non-pay/non-duty status for 2 weeks-6 months/year based on projects or weather. Guaranteed work at least 6 months/year but not more than 50 weeks/year. The typical non-pay status is Nov. to Mar. but can be variable due to project requirements or weather conditions. Serves as a front-line representative of the agency. Using excellent customer service, the incumbent staffs one of several visitor centers and provides current information to visitors concerning the park and other surrounding areas of interest. Explains the significance of the area's cultural resources as well as recreational opportunities within the National Aviation Heritage Area. Advises the public of park regulations and their importance for the safety of visitors and the protection of its resources. By helping visitors take an interest in the places they visit, promotes stewardship and provides the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. The primary responsibilities include: Responding to visitors who inquire about park information, direction, trip planning, and guidance. Providing orientation and/or safety messages for visiting groups. Presenting formal and informal interpretive talks, guided tours and programs that include hikes. The interpretation is of repetitive nature, follows a prescribed outline and requires broad subject-matter knowledge of the park. Offering a wide range of services to visitors that include, on occasion, guiding large groups (up to 50 people) on walking tours in both urban and natural settings. Representing the park at local community outreach events, assisting with educational programs in park, and helping with special events. Working closely with interpretive team, volunteers, other divisions, partners, and ensuring the safety of visitors, employees, and the public. Providing support for interpretive, volunteer and youth programs including recruitment, training, and reporting. Operating and maintaining records for government vehicles, audiovisual equipment, computers, telephones, and radio systems. Following safety standards, maintenance schedules, and equipment procedures. Working at one of six park units that includes following weekend and evening schedules and performing opening and closing procedures. Assisting cooperating association sales staff. Providing support for the park donation program, processing checks and managing deposits to the park donation account. LESS THAN FPL: Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion and can involve extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines outdoors or in caves, and carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Some employees may engage in firefighting, search and rescue, and other strenuous activities; these employees may be required to lift or carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances. Employees who participate in all-risk operations will be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis. Work Environment: The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures, climates, rough terrain, wild animals, pests, and/or insects). The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, boots, gloves, etc. Some employees may be engaged in all-risk operations and be exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations which require a range of safety and other precautions. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/06/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. GS-05: Must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; deliver structured and informal presentations using various communication techniques to a variety of audiences; archeological or historical preservation research work involving presentations. You must include hours per week worked. Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of coursework in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.) You must include transcripts. Combination of education and experience. For example, have six (6) months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement) and have an excess of 60 semester hours of college study (beyond the second year) from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of related coursework as specified (50% of the related coursework required). You must include transcripts. You must include hours per week worked. GS-07: Must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience could include park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; deliver structured and informal presentations using various communication techniques to a variety of audiences; archeological or historical preservation research work involving presentations; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. Possess one year of graduate study in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.) (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). You must include transcripts. Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successfully completed a bachelor's degree in a directly related field AND meet one of the following: (1) Class Standing: rank in the upper 3rd of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, based on the completed courses; OR (2) Grad-Point Average (GPA): earn a GPA of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on 4 years of education, or based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum -or- (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field, or the required courses completed during the final two years. Note: GPA will be rounded to the one decimal place, for example, 2.95 = 3.0, 2.94 = 2.9; OR (3) Membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society. You must include transcripts. For example, I have six (6) months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement) and one-half year (9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours) of directly-related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). Possess at least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of specialized experience could include independently researching, developing, and conducting formal and informal interpretation programs, roving programs, and youth programs. Independently managing visitor center operations include developing work schedules, summer program schedules, coaching and auditing interpretive programs and operating and maintaining audio-visual and other interpretive equipment. May include tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; recreation or conservation area management; management assistant; or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. Completed at least two full years (36 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education OR master's or equivalent graduate degree in directly-related field of study such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts. Combination of education and specialized experience as described above. For example: 6 months of specialized experience as described above (50% of experience requirement), and 1.5 years (27 semester hours) of graduate level college study in a directly related field of study as described above (50% of the education requirement). The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.
