This position is located with the National Park Service, Division of Fire and Aviation Management, located at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), in Boise, Idaho. Information about the Boise area can be found at www.boisechamber.org.
Term position will be for a period not-to-exceed 2-years. This position may be extended without further competition; however, it may not exceed a total of ten (10) years.
Duties
Advise a team responsible for conducting historical/predictive analyses, developing metrics, and integrating products and work activities that impact objectives of the wildland fire program management decision making, modeling, and IT solutions
Technical advisor providing expertise to the OWF Data Management Program staff, DOI, USFS and partner agencies on the use of national data and automated systems to achieve wildland fire management goals
Planning, design, development and application of data and statistical models and methodologies for analyzing components of the IT solutions, models, and decision-making resources using advanced technologies involving large data sets
Coordinate and work with data managers within DOI, USFS, and other federal and non-federal agencies to develop and implement national data management policy, guidance, and procedures to be utilized for the Wildland Fire management program

Qualifications
Basic Education Requirements:
Data Science Series 1560 Basic Qualifications
A) Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. -OR-
B) Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

For GS-13: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
Participating in research and statistical analysis on available data and evaluate the effectiveness of statistical programs/applications
Modifying instructions, methodologies, and/or guidelines as necessary to achieve program objectives
Developing program material and documentation
Developing or presenting training to internal or external audiences on data science topics
Participating in the analysis of management information requirements to develop program or administrative reporting systems including the systems specifications, data gatherings and analytical techniques, and system evacuation methodology, performing queries using various types of database and analytical tools
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
There is no substitution of education for specialize experience at the GS-12 and above grade levels.
