Duties

Provides design, development, and testing in such areas as new components and subassemblies, special systems and subsystems, experimental communications equipment, state-of-the-art electronic data systems and hybrid computers, advanced structural testing, and other similar projects. Designs configurations for AF and Joint Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence Systems (C4I} Host System Software Interoperability Testing (referred to as C4I Interoperability Testing). Provides technician support to engineers in the design and development of unique output-input interfaces and associated electronic equipment necessary to accomplish weapon C4I Interoperability Test system integrity, longevity, expandability, and safety testing relating to computer systems and other components, and in resolving system deficiencies and concerns. Performs development work to prepare new devices or make modifications, additions, or improvements to assigned electronic communications systems. Provides electronic technician expertise in the resolution of very difficult maintenance problems which are generally beyond the scope or lower graded mechanics and technicians, and which involve highly complex electronic systems being repaired, overhauled, modified, and tested.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-10, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes extensive practical knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of electronics and the expert ability to apply this knowledge to complex work assignments; knowledge of electronic systems design, mathematics, computer data and acquisition systems, test and measurement techniques, and high degree of personal initiative and creativity; Ability to establish design concepts based on individual knowledge and experimentation, and performs fabrication and testing. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-10 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of electronics technician practices, methods, and techniques. Knowledge of electronics technician processes and operations. Practical knowledge of the use of electronic test equipment to include oscilloscopes, data bit error rate test sets, and a variety of digital diagnostic test equipment. Ability to read engineering plans and specifications. Knowledge of current automation technology and practices essential for the accomplishment of electronics technician work. Knowledge of test standards, methods, practices, techniques and equipment. Skill in researching, analyzing, interpreting and applying rules, regulations and procedures. Skill in written and oral communications. Ability to plan, organize, work, and meet deadlines. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
