This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Serves as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in the Outside Maintenance section at the Omaha District, Operations Division, Oahe Project.
Duties
Perform heavy mobile equipment mechanic work including troubleshooting malfunctions, determining the type and extent of repair required, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
Perform automotive mechanic work including troubleshooting malfunctions, determining the type and extent of repair required, repairing, and maintaining vehicles.
Operate, navigate, and is responsible for maintenance of several types of boats and floating equipment.
Remove and repair major systems or components of equipment to include transmissions, starters, generators, carburetors, fuel pumps, braking systems, and steering systems.
Replace and adjust tracks; replace and adjust road wheels, road wheel bearings, idler wheels, idler bearings and oil seals; replace suspension arms, torsion bars, stabilizer bars, etc.
Diagnose and repair all types of failures in electrical systems.
Repair and replace wiring; removes, tests, repairs, and replaces defective assemblies and parts, i.e., line switches, relays, etc.
Diagnose and repair fuel system failures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Pre-employment and annual physical required.
- This is a random drug and alcohol testing position under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform perform common maintenance functions of disassembling, repairing, and/or assembling major systems, components, and/or operating mechanisms on heavy mobile equipment. I can perform maintenance such as changing oil, lubricating and repairing tires, and repairing carburetors, fuel pumps and fuel lines. I have a good understanding of mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic theory applying to heavy duty vehicles. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position has selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. This position requires a valid state issued Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of application. (You must upload a copy of your current CDL with your application.)
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods and requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The mechanic frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work dirty, greasy and noisy, possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes.
