About the Position: As the Cartographic Technician working in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District in Jersey City, New Jersey, will report to the Branch Chief of the Survey Section in the Operations Division.

Duties

Uses state-of-the-art Multi-beam/Channel Sweep data collection systems to collect data. Collects bathymetric data necessary for the production of maps, charts and other related products. Applies field operational requirements to develop cost estimates and project schedules. Assists to prepare conclusions and recommendations for project reports. Reviews over water and river engineering data collection programs using Channel Sweep technology. Analyzes collected data to ensure it is edited and interpreted correctly.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 10% of the time.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Collecting data using Multi-beam, single beam, and side scan sonar; and 2) Operating differential levels, total station, and GPS equipment to collect topographic data and/or features; and 3) Utilizing software (i.e. Hypack) to collect, process, map, and compute volumes on various surveys; and 4) Applying techniques of remote sensing to produce maps and/or charts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: CartographyPlanning and EvaluatingTechnology Application Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
