The primary purpose of this position is to inspect. repair, maintain, modify, test, calibrate, align, adjust, functionally check and certify T1 instruments, automatic flight control, navigation, radar, communication, electrical and environmental systems and components using common and specialized test equipment.
Duties
- Installs, modifies, tests, maintains, troubleshooting repairs, calibrates and certifies installed aircraft instrument, navigation, radar, communication, automatic flight control, electrical and environmental systems and their replacement components.
- Sets up and operates common and specialized automatic test equipment (ATE) to test and troubleshoot various components and assemblies of electrical equipment such as radio/radar receivers and transmitters.
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled aircraft/system inspections. Performs flight line and ground handling operations.
-Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping. both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools. Establishes and maintains good working relationships.

- Have, obtain or maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Must pass flight line vehicle operations test.
- Performs Foreign Object (FO) inspections and FO walks in accordance with established regulations and procedures.
- Must pass aircraft towing procedures test.
- Must acquire and maintain Red X inspection certification.
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours, rotating shifts, uncommon tours of duty, emergency call back, weekends, holidays, overtime, etc
- May be required to travel TDY as directed by management, sometimes on short notice, traveling by military or commercial aircraft, or any other designated means
- May be required to participate in contingency situations real world or exercise, as directed.
- Cannot be color blind to colors used for runway operations (red, green and white)
- Performs all other related duties as directed.
- This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-2600-Electronic Equipment Installation and Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a ELECTRONICS MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of T-1 complex mechanical and electronic systems, subsystems, and components associated with aircraft's instrument, automatic flight control navigation, communication, electrical and environmental systems to include knowledge of their related electrical, mechanical, optical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Skill in selecting and using various types of general and special purpose measuring instruments, tools and test equipment to include use of standard hand and power tools of the electronics trade. Ability to remove and install a variety of aircraft parts, accessories, components in proper sequence. One (1) year in at least (3) years performing as an avionics mechanic on T-1 aircraft highly desirable.
2. Comprehensive knowledge of operation , capabilities and limitations of complex electronic systems complicated by a variety of component assemblies and devices, Knowledge of mathematical expressions and formulas including algebra, Boolean algebra, and basic trigonometry to apply in construction truth tables, logic equations, power relationships, signal phasing, etc. Ability to read and interpret instructions, specifications and a variety of technical data such as schematic diagrams, blue prints, technical orders. etc. to troubleshoot and repair various systems malfunction where circuit theory must be used to understand the operation of individual circuits and the interaction of other circuits to create a malfunction. Ability to use a variety of electronic, electrical and/or electromechanical test and measurement equipment to test complete aircraft instrument, automatic flight control, navigation, radar, communication, and electrical and environmental systems. Skill to trace hard to locate and intermittent electrical defects and problems using a variety of meters and test devices. Ability to perform as Task Oriented Trainer (TOT) to provide FTD type training to other personnel.
3. Knowledge of Red X inspection procedures for assigned aircraft and the ability to evaluate work, which has placed aircraft in Red X status.
4. Aircraft ground handling knowledge to include proper-lower radio operations and procedures; towing characteristics of assigned aircraft including landing gear, safety pins, wing locks, braking systems and tying down and grounding methods; procedures for safely refueling and de-fueling aircraft and the ability to safely refuel and defuel aircraft
5. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, tech orders and other guidelines. Knowledge of tool, equipment, materials accounting, and security procedures.
6. Ability to use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions. Ability to effectively communicate orally and legibly in writing. Ability to maintain and perform in a fast paced high tempo environment under noisy and sometimes very warm conditions and to work and interact with others in a business like manner.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy lifting 40 pounds lifts heavier items with assistance of other workers or lifting equipment. Moderate carrying (15-44 lbs). Hours of straight pulling are 1 hr/day. Hours of pulling hand over hand are 1 hr/day. One hour of pushing per day. Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Five hours walking per day. Five hours standing per day. Three hours crawling per day. Three hours kneeling per day. Three hours repeated bending per day. Three hours of climbing, leg only, per day. Climbing use of arms and legs. Both legs required. Operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable to 13 inches to 26 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Specific vision requirement: Cannot be color blind to colors used for runway operations (R, W, G). Both eyes required. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of colors. Hearing aid permitted. Annual hearing test. WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee performs the work either inside or outside. Subject to prevailing weather conditions, noise extremes, slippery or uneven surfaces and working in confined areas.
