This position is located at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, in Porter, Indiana. The primary purpose of this position is to provide custodial maintenance, grounds keepings, and minor park maintenance work in the Division of Maintenance. In addition, this position operates motor vehicles as a regular and recurring part of the position. The incumbent works under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor.
Duties
Clean and sanitize restrooms and fixtures throughout the park. Replaces and/or installs paper goods, etc, in restrooms.
Scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers. Washes walls using powered wall washing machine and/or by hand.
Vacuums/cleans rugs using heavy vacuum cleaner. Adjusts, cleans and oils these machines and changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments on them.
Washes and replaces blinds and washes ceiling fixtures and room partitions using ladders and scaffolds. Moves heavy furniture, supplies and equipment.
Uses various preparations to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floor, wall and ceiling surfaces. Removes stains from a variety of surfaces using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
AREA INFORMATION:
Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. The park is among the top 10% of most visited national park units annually; it is within 3 hours of 30 million people, includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, several historic districts, and over 50 miles of trails through forest, dune, wetland, and prairie ecosystems. The park is the birthplace of the science of ecology, has some of the most diverse plant and avian communities in the National Park Service, and hosts an array of exceptional cultural resources, for example the 1933 World's Fair Century of Progress homes. Small towns and vacation communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan, along with industrial corridors and farmlands, interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands, surround the park. All services are available in the communities, including schools, colleges, shopping, and other major amenities. The area has weather typical of the Midwest with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. No government housing available, however, many houses and rental properties exist in the surrounding communities.

TERM POSITION:
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of three years and 5 months, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
An appointment to this position is restricted by law (5 U.S.C. 3310) to Veterans who are preference eligible as long as such applicants are available. All Custodial certificates must list the preference eligible first, then a certificate of non-preference eligible may be issued.

SCREEN OUTS:
Perform the most difficult and complex laborer and custodial/janitorial tasks including ability to operate trucks and trailers weighing up to 10,000 pounds; properly loading and unloading various supplies and equipment; to perform work providing laboring assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, cleaning restrooms, windows, vacuuming carpets, floors, emptying trash and recyclables; operate power equipment such as floor scrubbers, floor buffers and floor strippers; and safely use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, etc. Able to safely operate this vehicles/equipment in all types of traffic and weather conditions. Utilize most hand and power tools associated with these tasks including light hand and power and cleaning custodial tools. Experience performing operator maintenance on all vehicles/equipment operated (e.g. monitoring fluid levels and checking tire pressure). Perform these duties as an expert with a high degree of independence. Supervisor assigned work orally, through work orders, or with written specifications. Work was checked to see that it met compliance with work and safety standards and policies.
This position requires that the incumbent possess a Driver's License. If you do not meet these minimum qualifications, you will be considered ineligible and will not receive consideration for this position.
