This position is located at the Black Hills VA Health Care System within the Facilities Management service line. A general knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry skills, and minor troubleshooting skills is required.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Performs basic and routine repair for various trades that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, cleaning, adjusting, and testing defective parts and equipment such as light fixtures, dish washers, garbage disposals, electrical appliances, drains, faucets, hot water heaters, doors, switches, and other like equipment Hooks up to installed systems such as water, steam, sewer, gas, and electrical Assists journeyman Pipefitters, Electricians, and Carpenters when additional manpower is needed for higher level technical tasks Uses work order, oral instructions, manufacturer's literature and sketches that provide information on work needing to be accomplished Performs minor troubleshooting and requests assistance and direction from his/her supervisor and journeyman when faced with complex problems Installs replacement equipment, devices, and fixtures and replaces sections of pipe using previously determined routing, hangers, and sizing Performs Preventative Maintenances as assigned following established procedures Provides routine maintenance and repair to include replacing light bulbs, replacing stained or damaged ceiling tile, repairing or coordinating repairs roof and water leaks Performs electrical safety checks on electrical appliances to ensure appliances are in safe condition Inspects the general condition of the equipment and ensures cords are intact to include end plug and electrical cord Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview) Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD20262A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not authorized The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. For this position, you must have the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Examples of qualifying related experience include but are not limited to: perform a variety of plumbing duties such as repairing leaks, faucets, tubs, toilet components, etc.; perform basic carpentry tasks such as measuring, sawing, cutting and caulking construction materials; perform basic electrical duties such as disconnecting power sources, replacing light fixtures, fuses, switches ballasts, and bulbs; and utilize necessary common hand and power tools. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. The employee works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms to reach hard to access places to perform assigned tasks. The position requires the employee to stoop, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and lift and move parts and equipment up to 50 lbs. Occasionally the employee is required to lift items in excess of 50 pounds. Working Conditions: This position completes work assignments both inside and outside and may be exposed to temperature and weather extremes. The employee is exposed to dirty, dusty, and greasy conditions. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
