About the Position: Serves as Consumer Safety Officer assigned to Public Health Activity, Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
Duties
Plans, develops and conducts Initial, Routine, Directed, and Special Food Protection Audits of commercial food establishments for the Activity throughout the states of North Carolina and southern Virginia.
Performs audit administrative tasks to which includes tasking, tracking, and reviewing reports within the Activity.
Serves as the team lead with oversight of the Activity Food Protection Program under the supervision of the Activity Food Safety Officer (FSO).
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess and maintain a state issued driver’s license.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 70% of the time.
- Employee is required to wear safety equipment appropriate for the work area as directed by management of audited plant.
- This position requires the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 65 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- Position requires long periods of standing and sitting. Also, may require climbing and squatting.

Basic Requirement for Consumer Safety Officer (Subsistence):
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in quality assurance or a related degree that included at least 30 semester hours in one or a combination of the following: consumer laws, biological sciences, food science, chemistry, pharmacy, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, legal investigations, law enforcement, or related scientific fields that provided knowledge directly related to consumer safety officer work. The 30 semester hours may include up to 8 semester hours in statistics, or course work that included the principles, theory, or practical application of computers or computer programming.
OR
Combination of education and experience--courses consisting of at least 30 semester hours in the fields of study described in paragraph above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualifications listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performs a variety of sanitary audits (such as routine, special, directed routine and initial sanitary audits) of commercial food establishments; assigns audit ratings and ensures the correctness of findings to adequately assess an establishment's acceptability for subsistence procurement or storage; AND communicates federal food safety standards/regulations to all levels of personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
