The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Station Chief responsible for oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of a fire station with two or more firefighting crews (including a Crew Chief and assigned crew who drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, fight airfield and structural fires, perform crash and rescue operations, and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards.
Duties
1. This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19. As the Station Chief, provides immediate oversight and direction of day-to-day operations at a fire station for an assigned shift.
2. Supervises the performance of structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes; hazardous materials (HAZMAT) containment and control duties; and/or Basic Life Support duties.
3. Supervises: the performance of crash-rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling complex aircraft e.g. fighters, bombers; cargo, passenger).
4. Directs the operation of firefighting vehicles such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and crash-rescue trucks.
5. Supervises the rescue of personnel and immediate first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility. Supervises the maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Complies with health, safety, security, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

- This position is designated by the Air Force as n Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force civilian drug-testing program. As a mandatory requirement for employment in this TDP.
- The incumbent is to (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and (b) if required, submit to urinalysis testing.
- The selectee must sign statements acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP and is subject to random drug testing (IA W HQ-USAF letter dated 29 Jan 90).
- This position is designated as a key position JAW A.FI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations.
- Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternatives for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
- The employee is required to work. a 72-hour week on a 24 hour on, 24 hour off basis which includes weekend and holidays. May be subject to recall.
- Required to participate in a mandatory physical fitness program and pass a pre-employment physical.
- Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
- This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
- Incumbent is required to perform critical services regardless of weather conditions or base closure and will report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled reporting time.
- Must participate in offered Air Force schools. regional training seminar and courses related to this position.
- An Associate’s Degree in Fire Science is desirable.
- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current Colorado State driver's license.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
- May be assigned to any of the three fire stations or the auxiliary airfield locations at any time. When assign to the auxiliary airfield, may work an uncommon tour.

Must obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance; May occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station and travel on military and/or commercial aircraft; Overtime may be required; May be required to perform other duties in support of extended mission requirements based on the scope of the squadron mission during times of conflict or staffing shortages; May have additional duties assigned; May be required to perform duties in support of the READY program including performing escort duties, ID checks, and other duties as required.
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0081, Fire Protection and Prevention Series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-08, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
Special Retirement Provisions Authority: FERS Position covered as secondary under the FERS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8401(14), 5 U.S.C. 8412(d), and 5 CFR 842.802]. OR Position covered as secondary under the CSRS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8331(21), 5 U.S.C. 8336(c), and 5 CFR 831.902].
Effective 1 Jun 00, all DoD firefighters and contract fire and emergency service personnel must be certified at the next higher level before being eligible for promotion to that level. Applicants must list their current firefighter related licenses and certificates on their resumes. Certification requirements for this position are: Fire Officer II (Fire Officer Ill is highly desirable), Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector l, HAZMAT Incident Commander and Airport Firefighter.
Possess/maintain current State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT)- Basic Life Support (EMT-B) certification upon hire or within the year. Complete and maintain Colorado Certification Training program for Wildland Firefighting or Red Card upon hire or within the year.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
l. Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; of the principles of hydraulic, as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc. and of basic and specialized firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.) techniques, and procedures.
2. Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders and HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, and identification.
3. Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy; and of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement. and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply system.
4. Skill in detecting and recognizing fire hazards (potential and immediate); and skill to operate communications equipment that influence the effectiveness of the fire protection and prevention program.
5. Ability to maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
