About the Position: This position is located in Operations Division, Chesapeake City Project Office, Bridge and Electrical Team. This position will be filled in Chesapeake City, Maryland.
Duties
Perform a variety of manual labor tasks incidental to trade or craft work or warehousing activities
Assist higher graded bridge mechanics in performing maintenance and repair work
Climbs and rig scaffolding along bridges to hook up safety cables for other members of the crew and ensure safety and security.
Clean sand and salt concentrations from bridges with high pressure hoses and pumps
Prepare surfaces for painting by chipping, sandblasting and applying base and finish coats
Clean and maintain tools and materials and equipment
Operate government vehicles such as pickup trucks/sedans, flatbed trucks and the vehicles which typically have an approximate gross weight up to 10,000 lbs to transport bulk materials, equipment and/or passengers
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver's license.
- Must undergo and pass pre-employment physical and biennially thereafter.
- Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol (to include urine analysis) tests thereafter.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
- May be required to serve a one year probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): The ability to perform the work of a Bridge Mechanic Helper (MVO) independently without more than normal supervision to include tasks such as: performing various repair work, and/or safely operate and maintain small power and hand tools and/or ability to operate pickup trucks, sedans, or flatbed trucks - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Works in cramped and hard to reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently required to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and over. The incumbent exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed outdoors and at considerable heights. Danger of serious cuts, bruises and broken bones and falls from high places exists. Use of protective clothing and respirator is required when sandblasting. Subject to skin and eye irritations when using solvents and painting.
