This position is in the Grounds & Transportation Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS) Line of the VA Butler Healthcare System (VABHS) and reports to the Mobility Manager. The incumbent is a motor vehicle operator, safely transporting patients, family member (care takers/escorts) & employees, as well as supplies and personal belongings/medications, between campuses of the VA Butler Healthcare System. This position reports directly to the motor vehicle operator supervisor.
Duties

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
Major Duties:
Operate gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles which typically have an approximate gross
vehicle weight up to 26,000 pounds.
Perform operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, safety belts and washing the vehicle).
Drive station vehicles such as pick-up trucks, sedans and/or station wagons, as assigned, to
accomplish the necessary workload.
Operates equipment utilized in patient transportation including, but not limited to: wheelchairs, stretchers/gurneys, stair chairs, vehicle lifts, etc.
Utilize appropriate safety devices for all patient trips.
Picks up patients at a VABHS campus, their homes, contract nursing home, community
based outpatient clinic (CBOC), etc., and transports and delivers to their destinations.
May also transport patients' personal belongings, oxygen tank, wheelchair, and
medications.
Recognizes when a patient and care takers/escorts are in distress or unresponsive.
Operate street sweepers, gardening/landscaping equipment, and snow removal equipment.
Will assist in all types of grounds maintenance including but not limited to garden and landscaping duties. Incumbent will provide assistance during relocation of employees,
patients and services within the medical center buildings.

Physical Requirements: Moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to simultaneously operate hand and foot controls, and in normal driving because of the vehicle or equipment involved.
Physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients including those in wheelchairs or on stretchers May occasionally handle objects weighing over 50 pounds. Physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs while on assigned trips.
Lift and handle heavy equipment and exert heavy physical effort lifting, pushing and pulling
when transporting patients via wheelchair and stretcher. Full use of arms and legs to safely
operate mechanical equipment. Simultaneously manipulate equipment controls for tasks
requiring body coordination.
Exposed to congested traffic conditions, unsafe roads conditions due to ice, snow and rain,
fumes and dust. Incumbent may also be in contact with diseases from patients
Working Conditions: Works mostly outside and operates vehicles in all kinds of weather (sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, etc.) in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation or establishment and on public roadways. Operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
May be exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving. Required to use protective personal equipment when transporting patients with communicable diseases. Subject to bodily injury when patients require physical adjustment and are non-compliant with verbal directions from MVO.
