This Biological Science Technician position is located at Zion National Park, in Springdale, Utah and will assist with vegetation management at Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Pipe Spring National Monument. This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 1 pay period (2 weeks) each year, scheduled between mid-December and late-December. Duties

This Biological Science Technician position is located at Zion National Park, in Springdale, Utah and will assist with vegetation management at Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Pipe Spring National Monument. This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 1 pay period (2 weeks) each year, scheduled between mid-December and late-December. Career-Seasonal appointments include the same benefits as year-round Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Major Duties: Assist with vegetation management at Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Pipe Spring National Monument. Develop and implement invasive vegetation control projects in front and backcountry locations. Responsibilities include prioritizing projects, selecting appropriate invasive plant control method, leading work crews and managing field data. Work involves the use of herbicides. Work requires regular physical exertion including hiking several miles in a day while lifting & carrying up to 50 pounds. Backcountry Work: You may be required to travel and/or camp overnight away from home up to 4 or more nights per month, to include backcountry work and camping. There is a lot of backcountry work during the summer and/or warmer months that can last more than 8 days at a time, but rare in winter. Typically, backcountry travel will be with a team camping for up to 4 days and 3 nights at a time. Full performance level for this position is GS-0404-09. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Physical Demands: The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect, and /or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to handle wild animals, prepare soil for planting, to scuba dive or operate a boat. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Working Conditions: The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggle, and/or gloves.

For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For GS-08: At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include hours per week worked. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for the GS-08 include: Habitat restoration; Invasive plant management; Plant monitoring; and/or Working with seasonal staff and/or volunteer conservation crews. To qualify for the GS-09: At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include hours per week worked. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for the GS-09 include: Habitat restoration; Invasive plant management; Plant monitoring; Leading volunteers, seasonal staff, and/or volunteer conservation crews; Prescribing invasive plant treatments; and/or Develop and implement habitat restoration projects. -OR- EDUCATION: For both GS-08 & GS-09: Successful completion of two full years (36 semester/54 quarter hours) of graduate level course work, from an accredited college or university, leading to a master's degree or a master's degree with a major study DIRECTLY related to the work of this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants. To combine education and experience, first take percentage of required graduate education. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include a copy of your transcripts. VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Be sure to include the to/from and month/year format for volunteer experience to receive credit for that time.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
