The Painter position is located in the Building Maintenance Unit, Paint Shop of the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) Engineering Service, Maintenance and Operations Section. The incumbent receives little or no instructions in the performance of assigned tasks. Incumbent, by the nature of the work, often works with other skills/crafts.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Redecorate offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters and shop buildings.
Applying special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining.
Installing vinyl wall coverings, hanging paper, etc.
Knowledge of how to build up, shape and level surfaces, with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone, even out dents and scars, by burning-in processes and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents.

Glaze and caulk windows on air conditioning.
Cutting stencil, painting signs and blending and mixing colors; preparing coating material by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing various additives.
Read and apply directions relating to mixture, use and application of various kinds of materials.
Prepare and coat surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms.
Receives little or no instructions in the performance of assigned tasks.
Works with other skills/crafts and performs all other duties as assigned.
Surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.
Paint and refinish furniture, wood and metal, such as desks, cabinets, chairs, operating room and building service equipment.
Skilled in matching, tinting, toning and blending coating materials and in combining agents with coating materials.
Skilled in the use of tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices and wet and other thickness gauges.
Work Schedule: Wednesday - Sunday 7:00AM - 3:30PM

Physical Requirements: The employee prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This position requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries and sets up equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, the employee may handle materials that weight 40 pounds or over.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. The employee sometimes works outside in bad weather. Occasionally, the employee may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
