This position is located at Shiprock Service Unit, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Division of Administrative Services, Facility Management Branch, Shiprock, NM. Incumbent performs work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices; Plumbing, Carpentry, Equipment Repair Painting, and Electrical. Incumbent reports to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor or Facility Manager.

Duties

Installs plumbing equipment such as sinks, lavatories, whirlpool hot tub, showers, tank less water heater and electric/gas hot water heaters. Replaces plumbing fixtures. Modifies/repairs water/diagnosis and waste disposal systems. Installs sewer pipes/pumps, valves, controls and fittings. Erects new structures and modifies existing structures. Determines dimensions, type structures, location and type of windows, doors to be installed and material to be used in construction. Measures, cuts, and adjusts doors and windows frames to size. Installs hinges, mortises door and casings for the locks and striking plates. Performs other maintenance and alternation such as exterior siding, roofs, relocating partitions doors, construction additions. Makes minor repairs and adjustments to air conditioning systems and boilers. Utilizes building monitoring system Direct Digital Controls (DDC) for heating and cooling system. Mixes and blends paints. Prepares surfaces for painting. Paints buildings, structures, furniture. Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders and insulates defective wiring, controls equipment and fixtures. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring. Installs or rearranges light fixtures, switches and outlets.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: SCREEN-OUT: Do you have the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the work of a Maintenance Mechanic, as described in the vacancy announcement, without more than normal supervision? Although no specific amount of experience, education, or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X-118C for the WG-4749 series is used as a basis for qualifications. Applicants must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in the Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position. The job elements of a Maintenance Mechanic are listed below. Your rating will be based on your proficiency in these competencies. Examples of experience: Performed work in all areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, equipment repair, painting, welding, and locksmith. Able to operate heavy equipment such as G-series Skid-steer loader, forklift, Grader, Bobcat, and dump truck. Performs minor preventive maintenance on all equipment and test all equipment for effective/efficient use. Physical Requirements:The work may require continual standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching above the head, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Occasionally works in awkward and cramped conditions when making repairs, work is sometime performed on ladders and /or scaffolds. Working Conditions:Work is performed inside and outside the government quarters and occasionally in inclement weather. Work is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. Incumbent may perform work where bad smelling fumes are present. Incumbent has frequent exposure to possibility of cuts, bruises, electrical shock, chemical irritations and broken bones while working around machinery and equipment. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether the experience as gained a part-time or full-time occupation. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position they have held. Work experience must contain dates and hours worked per week. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
