The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical work that supports access to archival holdings and maintains physical and intellectual control over records. The work encompasses the full range of archival support services to include reference, researcher assistance, and other customer service.
Duties
Facilitates access to books in Special Collections by entering, retrieving, or correcting routine cataloging records in the library management system (LMS).
Provides research services to users under the direction of the supervisor and in collaboration with senior branch staff.
Arranges and describes Academy records and manuscript collections in accordance with higher-level criteria established by the supervisor.

- Incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/ or holidays.
- Incumbent opens and secures the branch in accordance with security checklists, as required. Examines the Gimbel Library for safeguarding and security violations, as specified by USAF A policies and procedures
- May be required to train and assist lower grade employees in library and archives procedures.

- Incumbent is required to apply proper lifting techniques.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions, Archives Technicians Series 1421
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of descriptive copy cataloging standards and processing of books, including correcting bibliographic information and MARC records and printing catalog cards and spine labels with call numbers. Knowledge of best practices in library and archives research support using complex finding aids, inventories, and digital archives systems to answer inquiries, screen records, and carry out targeted digitization as required to meet user needs. Knowledge of general archival principles, procedures, and techniques applicable to acquiring, preserving, safeguarding, and providing for use of agency documents and manuscript collections, including understanding of access restrictions in library and archives settings.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of descriptive copy cataloging standards and processing of books, including correcting bibliographic information and MARC records and printing catalog cards and spine labels with call numbers.
Knowledge of best practices in library and archives research support using complex finding aids, inventories, and digital archives systems to answer inquiries, screen records, and carry out targeted digitization as required to meet user needs.
Knowledge of general archival principles, procedures, and techniques applicable to acquiring, preserving, safeguarding, and providing for use of agency documents and manuscript collections, including understanding of access restrictions in library and archives settings
Ability to develop expertise in Air Force and Air Force Academy histories, as well as pertinent federal regulations related to records management and archives.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy to deliver quality customer service.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
