The incumbent position is located at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. The incumbent works in the Maintenance & Operations Section, Facilities Management Service, and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of HVAC equipment/systems, refrigerators, freezers and related components to ensure that the Medical Center is maintained in a high state of repair and safe operation.
Duties
Major duties include but limited to:
Troubleshoot, diagnose and make repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide for a variety of air-conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification, and air cleaning, filtering and circulating. Many of the repairs are of a very complex nature involving work in the electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and air-conditioning trades.
Perform a variety of repairs ranging from replacing entire assemblies to simple adjustments and changing filters.
Find the cause of a problem using a large variety of diagnostic or testing equipment and remedy the situation quickly to avoid disruption of patient care.
Rebuild units, such as pump, compressors, heating/cooling coils, valves, replacing parts such as bearing, seals, gaskets, piston rings, pneumatic valves, controls, and couplings. Must have knowledge of computers and various building control systems.
Determine the need for any emergency engineering services on other than day shifts. In the event of a major emergency or chemical spill will act as first contact for engineering and take charge of the engineering responsibilities in the area until such time as the problem is solved or personnel normally assigned to those duties arrive on the scene.
Shall act as member of Integrated Project Teams for construction.
Assist project engineers and inspect HVAC related projects as well as reviewing plans and prints for errors or needed changes to upcoming HVAC projects.
Responsible for shutdown and restart of fire alarms on other than day shift and must have a through knowledge of procedures involved including fire zones.
Responsible for coordinating emergency efforts in the event of a fire until the proper personnel arrive on the scene.
Document work through the electronic work order system. Also keeps incident log to ensure information is passed from shift to shift.

Physical Requirements: The Air Conditioning Mechanic works on large and complex systems that required maneuvering in and out of locations while dismantling and reassembling. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, forklifts and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Makes repairs, adjustments and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where components worked are in hard-to-reach places. Parts of systems are in interstitial or crawl spaces, available only by crawling through the spaces and made additionally more difficult by the necessity of carrying filters and tools. To further complicate the process, there are ducts, conduit and piping intersecting the crawl spaces that must be traversed. Therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling and crawling are frequently necessary in performing duties assigned.
