This position is a Museum Curator, GS- 1015-12 working in one of the following locations for the R3-Division of Visitor Services and Outreach. A total of one position will be filled. Duties

As a Museum Curator your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Responsible for the proper accessioning and cataloging of objects in the collection, maintenance of location records, current inventory of cataloged and un-cataloged objects and annual inventory of objects, and for the maintenance of a current accession book and legal documentation files in paper format. Tracks and manages, through the use of a relational database, all the current and future identified museum property in the region in cooperation with the RHPO, FWS stations and non-federal repositories. Prepares all documentation required for collection record keeping. Documents all loans of objects to and from the collection through the preparation of signed agreements. Responsible for the preparation of all planning documents relating to CRM including Scope of Collection Statement, Curatorial Policies, Site Structure Histories, Emergency Operations Plan, Integrated Pest Management Plan, Security Plan, Collection Management Plan, Furnishing Plans and Studies, and departmental specific procedures. Advises the Regional Director, Assistant Regional Directors (ARDs), Division Lead, RHPO, and field managers on highly complicated or controversial museum collections and Native Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) matters, such as responsibilities for legacy collections, the development of comprehensive agreements, litigation, audits, and the reburial of repatriated remains on the public lands. Provides technical assistance for aspects of NAGPRA to regional programs, field offices, and partner repositories, including the recording, reporting, treatment, disposition and repatriation of ancestors, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony under FWS stewardship or discovered on FWS lands. Assists FWS staff in appropriate tracking of ancestors and cultural items until such a time that disposition or repatriation occurs. Provides for the traditional care and housing of NAGPRA-defined materials including working collaboratively with Tribal Nations and Indigenous Communities for housing materials until disposition/repatriation occurs.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 11/04/2024 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: A. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable-matter field. Note: Transcripts required. OR B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: Transcripts required, and your resume must contain sufficient detail of this level of work, i.e., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. OR C. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above. Minimum Qualification [GS-12] One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the federal service that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) accessioning and cataloging historic objects including maintaining location records and annual inventory of objects; 2) conducting on-site conservation of objects; 3) undertaking historical research on objects provenance, historic context, and value; 4) planning museum exhibits and preparing objects for display and protecting objects already in museum displays; 5) working with Native American Tribes, Alaska Native Corporations, or Native Hawaiian Organizations on issues concerning burials, and properties of traditional religious or cultural importance; 6) overseeing the collections for research, exhibit and interpretation, and loan of cultural resources; 7) preparing planning documents related to collection and management including Collection Statement, Curatorial Policies and Collection Management Plans. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient detail of this level of work, i.e., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically, i. Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
