About the Position: Serves as an Electronics Mechanic (Range Maintenance), for the Donnelly Training Area, performing complex range maintenance operations to include electronic mechanical, welding, and equipment operations which includes designing and fabricating unique training targets and devices.

Duties

Independently install, modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronics equipment of moderate complexity or a system of limited complexity. Uses accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes. Performs maintenance functions such as operating heavy engineering equipment (crawler and wheel type) equipped with bull and/or angle blade to grade, excavate, and slope banks to a rough grade in preparing areas or beds. Working from manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders and make preliminary visual inspections and operational tests to determine components causing malfunctions or invalid readings. Makes repairs by replacing damaged, missing, burnt or faulty items such as printed circuit cards; and transistors, diodes, resistors, etc., using the latest techniques in micro-soldering.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Alaska Driver's license.
  • This position may be required employee to operate a motor vehicle that requires a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement.
  • Hazards of this position may include outdoor work that involves extreme Arctic conditions (e.g., wind, snow, whiteout, extreme cold, etc.). Some work locations may only be accessible by snowmobile or ATV, 10-20 miles from primary work site.
  • There may be sporadic exposure to intense noise and potential injury from power tools. Employee may face exposure to injury from falls, electric shock, and unexploded ordinance.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) travel may be required up to 20% of the time. This may include performing duties at various range locations within Alaska.
  • Incumbent will be required to perform shift work, rotating shifts and days off, weekend/holiday work and overtime.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • Position requires the employee to pass pre-employment physical and annually thereafter.

They are sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Incumbent is exposed to the extremes of weather and must be able to walk along with the training units on rough terrain (1-2 miles) on various live fire ranges repetitively. Working Conditions: The work is performed indoors as well as outdoors in cold, hot and inclement weather. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns and falls from 30-foot towers. Incumbent is also exposed to electrical shock, dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives and may also be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries. Hearing protective devices, hard hats with face shield and other safety equipment and devices are issued or available for use.
