The primary responsibility of the Pharmacy Procurement Supervisor is to assume responsibility for the administration and operations of the Inventory/Formulary Management section. This pharmacist oversees the daily work of procurement, participates in all Pharmacy Service activities including clinically oriented programs and quality assurance activities, and coordinates all functions and activities within the Section to ensure they coincide with other sections.

VA Careers - Pharmacy: https://youtube.com/embed/Fn_ickNBEws Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Develops and revises Pharmacy Procurement, Automation, and Community Care policies and procedures with input from front line staff. Ensures the Inpatient/Outpatient Pharmacy is compliant with applicable Federal, VA, and local policies. Immediately responsible for assigned subordinate staff, including the pharmacy procurement team, automation staff, and community care staff. Primary oversight of all pharmacy inventory Management processes and functions. Responsible for managing day-to-day functions and activities of the pharmacy procurement staff, including organizing workload, directing procurement activities, planning short and long range objectives/goals, solving problems, and achieving established goals within budget and staffing constraints. Serves as the pharmacy recall coordinator by developing and implementing action plans to manage drug recalls. Develops and implements action plans in response to drug shortages and backorders. Produces and analyzes all reports pertaining to drug procurements, drug expenditures, drug use, and drug accountability. Works to develop and maintain a system that aids pharmacy staff in identifying actual or potential drug-related problems at the front end of the order thereby eliminating duplication of efforts, reducing medication errors, and increasing patient satisfaction. Ensures pharmacy staff understand how to report actual and/or potential medication errors or adverse events and participates in quality improvement initiatives to promote patient safety. Actively participates in the Adverse Drug Reactions reporting program. Responsible for implementing and documenting training and expanding capabilities of pharmacists and clinic support staff. Participates in meetings, conferences, and training programs relevant to the development and maintenance of the Pharmacy Procurement team. Promotes a patient-focused, team based multi-disciplinary model of pharmaceutical care to promote drug prescribing, medication monitoring and drug laboratory review that assures positive outcomes from medication use. Enhances current pharmacy system to place pharmacist into an environment of direct patient and prescriber contact, where pharmacist also have unrestricted access to clinical information. This system provides exceptional, timely pharmaceutical care services to all medical center patients. Performs quality control and facilitates performance improvement of pharmacy staff's work. Incorporates performance improvement activities into all areas of the procurement team's work. Develops quality assurance criteria, monitors, and evaluates quality of care provided and report results to appropriate Pharmacy Managers and Staff. Monitors and regularly reports on status of pharmacy expenditures, identifying significant changes, including data and information on specific drugs, therapeutic classes, supplies, etc. that have contributed to the changes. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education: Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, http://www.acpe-accredit.org/. Note: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy. Licensure: Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Supervisor Experience. In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs: a. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff. b. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. c. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy. d. Skill in managing people or programs. Preferred Experience: The ideal candidate has experience with managing inventories, financial analyses, cost-reduction strategies, and medical supplies including urinary catheters, ostomy supplies, and wound care items. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is a 13. Physical Requirements: Must be able to distinguish basic colors with the ability to distinguish shades of color. This position may require heavy lifting and carrying, 45 pounds or more, routine standing, VA Saginaw, MI FS #91850-0 bending, stooping, or squatting. It may also require pushing, walking, standing, reaching over shoulder, use of fingers, walking and standing up to four hours per tour. Near vision correctable at 13' to 16', far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted). The work environment is primarily inside a pharmacy or other office space as designated. There may be extremes of temperature, distractions, noise from equipment or patient care activities. The need to handle frozen or refrigerated products may occur. Exposure to negative and positive air pressure rooms is possible. Repeated twisting, shaking, and grasping of bottles, and vials or syringes may be required. Must be able to don and work with protective garments and equipment as necessary.
