This position is located at the Mann-Grandstaff (Spokane) VA Medical Center in the Facilities Management Service and performs carpentry duties, laborer duties, preventative maintenance and other miscellaneous duties.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Carpentry Duties:
Performs carpentry work that is assigned or reviewed by higher-graded employees or by work order.
Performs interior and exterior building repairs and maintenance work; ceiling tile replacement, installs systems furniture, hangs pictures, and other office and medical equipment.
Installing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partition panels, cabinets, bookcases and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.
Operates basic hand and power tools related to the carpentry trade.
Laborer Duties:
Duties include work that requires mainly physical abilities and effort in doing laborer duties involving little or no specialized skill or prior trades work experience. To include assisting other shops in moving equipment, delivering supplies to job sites, assisting in grounds maintenance, snow removal, cleaning shop and equipment rooms, etc.
Preventive Maintenance:
Performs preventive maintenance checks assigned through the PMI program, does minor repairs and adjustments to the assigned equipment or place a work order for repairs of equipment beyond the scope of the position.
Miscellaneous:
Performs maintenance worker duties by assisting the other trades under the direction of a higher-graded employee or work order. May be assigned PMs or work orders to accomplish basic repairs and checks of equipment assigned to the plumbing, electrical, ADP, air conditioning, grounds, or facility maintenance shops. Uses common power and hand tools associated with the trades to accomplish assigned duties.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Work requires considerable bending, kneeling and stooping. If the assignment is located at a job site, strenuous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, and other building/construction materials. Use manual or portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Construction work typically requires bending, stooping, climbing on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops. Lifts and moves materials weighing up to 40 pounds. With assistance, may lift/ move heavier items.
Working Conditions: Work is accomplished outdoors and in all kinds of weather and inside areas that are dusty, drafty, and noisy. When working in shop areas, exposed to moderate or high noise levels from machinery, sawdust, glue fumes and hazards related to power equipment. When working at project/construction sites, exposed to prevailing weather conditions and hazards associated with working around/on scaffolding and ladders. Subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics that are typically dusty and dirty. Uses protective equipment.
