About the Position: This position will be filled at a DB-02 (GS5-11) or a DB-04 (GS12-14) in the Information Technology Laboratory as any of the below series. Mechanical Engineer, 0830 Computer Engineer, 0854 Physicist, 1310 Mathematician, 1520 Computer Scientist, 1550

Duties

Solve large, multi-domain aerospace problems using knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and fluid mechanics principles. Use expertise in Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) and finite element analysis software (e.g. ANSYS, Mechanical, Abaqus, LS-DYNA) to look at various fuselage configurations. Perform combustion analysis using principles of flame dynamics, ignition, and extinction with knowledge of combustion chemistry and reaction kinetics. Assist in the development of novel and existing high-fidelity capabilities within the CFD workflow using numerical methods and algorithms with knowledge of iterative solvers and mesh generation. Use workflows for the pre-processing, simulation, and post-processing of large-scale simulations and aerodynamic databases. Create new analysis and modeling capabilities using common scientific computational programming languages (e.g., C++, Fortran, Python). Manage software develop activities using standard software development best practices (version control, unit testing, etc.). Prepare and run parallel simulations on massive supercomputers. Document analysis results through the authoring or co-authoring of science and engineering technical reports and giving client and organizational presentations for supported projects. Maintain technical proficiency in science and engineering, through interaction with technical and professional organizations, academia, contractors, and other research and development organizations. Write technical journal articles and give professional society presentations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Pre-employment and random drug testing may be required.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service DB-02 (GS-11). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Planning and EvaluatingTechnical CredibilityWritten Communication DB-02 Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04). DB-04 Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). All qualification requirements, including time after competitive appointment, must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This announcement MAY be used to fill like vacancies six months from the closing date. This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DB-2 (equivalent to GS-05 to GS-11) target to the DB-04 (equivalent to GS-12 to 14) level. If selected at the DB-02 level, you have the potential to be non-competitively promoted to the DB-04 level based on successful performance in the position. In accordance with the Federal Register Vol.63, No. 57, dated March 25, 1998, and employee of the Laboratory Demonstration project must have a current average performance score of 2.5 or above in order to be selected for promotion.
