About the Position: This is a permanent position as an Explosives Safety Specialist. This position is located with US Army Central Safety Shaw AFB, SC.
Note: Management may make selections at any grade level. Promotion to the next grade will be at management's discretion following completion of time-in-grade requirements, training, fully successful performance, and acquired and demonstrated experience.
Duties
Investigates ammunition and explosive accidents and incidents, and weapon-related accidents and incidents.
Provides technical explosives guidance and advice on such matters to Director of Safety, Senior Safety Manager, operational supervisors, USARCENT/CFLCC command group, and subordinate agencies and officials.
Serve as the technical explosives safety manager governing the implementation of a comprehensive explosives safety program for all activities within USARCENT/CFLCC AOR.
Monitors the effectiveness of explosives safety policies and procedures within USARCENT/CFLCC AOR that present potential safety and health hazards to military, civilian and contractor personnel, equipment, and the host nation general public.
Develops explosive safety policies for the command.
Prepares survey and inspection reports identifying unsafe operations and conditions, specifying corrective actions and provides recommendations for program improvements.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Secret security clearance required.
- Pre-employment and random thereafter drug testing required.
- Pre-employment and annual thereafter physical required.
- Valid state driver's license required.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid US Government driver's license within 30 days of employment.
- Incumbent may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and/or irregular duty hours or be on call commensurate with mission.
- Incumbent is exposed on a regular and recurring basis to hazardous equipment and conditions. Wear of personal protective equipment required.
- Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain standard Army Safety Program certification and be Safety and Occupational Health Career Program (CP-12) certified or be able to obtain certification within six months of appointment.
- Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain standard CP-12 Explosives Safety Certification Level II with significant roles or responsibilities in explosives safety. Candidate must be Level II certified to qualify for this position.
- This position is designated Emergency Essential (E-E) in support of mobilization and wartime mission. Employee will be required to remain in the overseas position in the event of hostilities or mobilization until relieved by proper authority.
- This position is designated as Mission Essential.

GS-12 ($86,962.00-113,047.00):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) assisting with inspections of facilities and equipment to determine compliance with applicable occupational safety standards; 2) providing input to reports identifying unsafe operations and conditions; and 3) advising personnel of appropriate measures to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes which may cause mishaps. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
GS-13 ($103,409.00-134,435.00):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) developing explosives safety criteria and procedures for a military installation; 2) performing inspections of facilities and equipment to determine compliance with applicable occupational safety standards; 3) preparing reports identifying unsafe operations and conditions; and 4) advising personnel of appropriate measures to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes which may cause mishaps. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
