You will serve as a Physical Scientist within NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Duties

You will participate in research of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) materials, GMR-based electronic devices, and other types of magnetoelectronic devices. You will be responsible for the growth and characterization of GMR and related magnetic materials and shall participate in the construction of nanometer-size devices. You will use techniques such as photo-lithography and focused ion beam milling. You will use a variety of thin-film deposition techniques including thermal evaporation, DC and RF sputtering and ion beam deposition. You will understand the fundamental principles in order to design materials for optimum performance. You will plan and execute the processing sequences in the construction of the nanoscale devices.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower pay band (NP-02) or grade level (GS 5-10) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Working in conjunction with others in the development of new magnetoelectronic devices; 2) Familiarity with biofunctionalization techniques for adapting magnetoelectronic device surfaces to biosensor applications; 3) Familiar with microwave absorber design techniques and principles; 4) Participation in research topics with other team members including superconducting materials, hard and soft magnetic films and multilayered structures, micromagnetic properties of magnetic structure and the application of these materials to magnetoelectronic sensor devices; 5) Knowledge of the magnetic properties of materials including soft and hard magnetic materials, and GMR materials and how these magnetic properties derive from the materials properties; AND 6) Knowledge of biofunctionalization of magnetoelectronic device surfaces and magnet micro- and nano-particle labels. Basic Education Requirements:

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
