This Mason position is located in the Facility Management Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System, located at the Togus location. This position is full-time at 40 per week.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Maintains, repairs, alters, and constructs interior and exterior surfaces built of a variety of block, stone, concrete and brick. Lays face and common brick, a variety of block, stone, concrete, quarry mosaic, ceramic and structural glazed tile, glass blocks, and fire brick. Repairs and constructs such items as wells, walks, chimneys, manholes, lockers, catch basins, and floors. Repair and maintain roofs, drains, scuppers, downspouts, and install floor tiles and suspended ceilings. Must have the ability to mix and apply plaster and finish plastered surfaces of interior and exterior walls and ceilings of new construction and/or repair existing structures, including stucco. Performs construction, alteration or modification, repair and replacement of items and structures such as framework, doors, windows, screens, paneling, interior and exterior trim, as well as the installation of wood and steel joists. Checks, inspects, repairs, and modifies a wide variety of office and wood furniture, including desks, file cabinets, chairs, lockers, dressers, bed boards, wardrobes, and convalescent chairs. Uses complex tools and equipment such as sliproll forming machines, crimpers, and beading machines for sheet metal repairs. Must have a good knowledge of shop mathematics to calculate angles, pitch and quantity of materials. Must know how to set up all power and hand tools associated with the maintenance mechanic trade in order to complete tasks such as cutting bevels, rabbets, grooves and miter joints. Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment. This position is an AFGE Bargaining Unit position. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50 (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is in the Competitive Service. This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 12/30/2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 11:59pm on 11/4/2024, with subsequent cut-off dates every two (2) weeks. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Requirements: This position requires considerable standing, stooping, and bending. Working on ladders and scaffolds, which require you to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such hand tools as handsaws and planers. You will occasionally lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Working Conditions: Some work is done inside a shop area where you are subject to cuts or danger from flying splinters and chips. On some occasions there will be sawdust in the air, which can be unpleasant. This position involves work outside in all kinds of weather and sometimes may be exposed to rain or very cold weather. Work on scaffolding, high ladders, or rooftops involve danger of falling.
